We spend a good part of our life working every day in an industry that
helps prevent loss of life and property. In some way every employee at
Fire engineering helps make sure our fire protection systems really can
save a life and safeguard property.
The chance of you being caught in a fire and saved by a fire protection
system is much less likely than you having a health related problem that
could take your life. Most everyone sincerely worries about their health.
But often, taking better care of our own bodies is set aside because we
prefer not to worry about it. Ask Tim Gardner and he will tell you that is
what he did. He pushed aside the worries and went on with life. Until his
life almost ended.
Our health insurance company is worried about you and they want to
save your life. That is why they have a Wellness Plan. If the phrase
“Wellness Plan” makes you defensive or raises your blood pressure, then
you may be the one who’s life needs to be saved. If the phrase “Wellness
Plan” is a positive thing for you, then you are the one who will take the plan
and add it to all the things you are currently doing to improve your health.
Beginning on January 1, 2018, a Wellness Plan will be implemented at Fire Engineering. You are not required to
participate. But if you choose not to participate, your health insurance will cost you more. How much more?
Possibly as much as 30%.
We each know about the unexplainable health issues that silently hit us or our loved ones. Then the questions
come such as, “Why is this happening?” Most agree that it is society’s responsibility to help carry these costs
through general health insurance premiums. Yet is it society’s responsibility to help carry the medical cost of
those who should be taking better care of themselves?
Our Wellness Plan will require the following for all employees and spouses,
if applicable:

Alone we can do so little, together we

Falls are the leading cause of fatalities in construction, accounting for one-third of all deaths in the
industry, Fall Arrest Systems are designed to eliminate the hazard. Fall Arrest Systems are made up of four
components: Full body harness, lifeline or lanyard, deceleration device (shock absorber), and an
anchorage point. The anchorage point selection is critical to a properly engineered Fall Arrest System. If
the anchorage point is inadequate, then the system will fail and the person will still fall. It is crucial to use a
Fall Arrest System as it was engineered to ensure that a fall will be stopped before you hit the ground.
Last October, two of our team members tested their Fall Arrest Systems at the Ormat Cooling Tower
project in California. They were standing on planks and hanging the main when the boards that were
holding their planks broke and they fell. Thankfully, they did not fall to the ground. Their Fall Arrest Systems
worked, and those two individuals are still here will us today.
Fall Arrest Systems may not be the most comfortable or easiest to work in, but without them two of
our friends and their family’s lives would have been changed for the worst on that October day.
